Road trips season is slowing approaching. Families and friends are excited to travel together and enjoy this bonding time. However, road trips are still very tiring and energy draining. Therefore, sleep quality on the road is extremely important. Here are some tips to help you sleep better on the road:
Find a Quiet, Dark, and Cool Environment
Your sleeping environment might be just why you are tossing and turning all night. Pick and choose somewhere you are most comfortable with. Places that are quiet, dark, and cool are proven the best sleeping areas. If you are having troubles with these factors, you can always use outside tool like earplugs, blindfolds, and fans to help you create the most optimal sleeping environment.
Watch What You Eat and Drink
When we are on the road, we don’t pay attention to what we eat and drink. Yet the food you consume could be the reason why you are awake all night long. Here is a list of DOs and DON’Ts:
Dos:
- Banana: contains a lot of magnesium which may help you get a good night’s sleep.
- Almonds: contains sleep-regulating hormone melatonin that helps you sleep better at night.
- Cherries: contains a hormone that regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep
- Turkeys: contains amino acid tryptophan which helps produce more sleep-regulating hormone melatonin in your body.
Don’ts:
- Avoid Big Meals at Night: It is almost impossible to tell yourself to eat less when you are traveling and see amazing food. However, did you know that eating too big of a dinner can affect your sleep quality? If your stomach doesn’t have enough time to digest all the food you consumed, you might just be up all night digesting your food.
- Cut Back on Sugary Foods and Refined Carbs: Catch yourself waking up every 45 minutes during your sleep? It might be your sugar consumption. The sugar you consume into your body can pull you out of your sleep in the middle of the night. Next time, try cutting out sugary and refined carbs for a better night of sleep.
- Avoid those Midnight Snacks: Chocolate, spicy food, and oily snacks are very crucial about keeping you up all night. Foods with high caffeine and fat content can either keep you tossing and turning or running to the restroom all right.
Exercise
Exercise has long been known for improving sleep quality. Casual workouts like a long walk or light stretchy could effectively reduce the time it takes to fall asleep and increased the length of sleep, compared to those that don’t exercise. However, keep in mind that vigorous aerobic exercise or lifting weights will not serve the same purpose. Exercise triggers an increase in body temperature, and the post-exercise drop in temperature may encourage your body to rest and fall asleep. Therefore, if you are struggling to fall asleep on the road next time, try doing a light workout.
Select a Good Mattress
Many of us aren’t picky about what we sleep on while traveling. Yet, after all, good sleep happens on a good mattress.
